Top 5 Most Common Insects in Guanacaste That Become Pests (And How to Control Them)
If you’ve ever tried to keep a garden looking green in Guanacaste all year…
You already know this is not a “normal” environment.
This is not Costa Rica rainforest.
This is:
- long dry season
- intense sun
- strong winds
- and in many areas… salty air
So when people ask:
👉 “What ground cover should I use?”
The answer is NOT simple.
Because here’s the truth:
👉 most ground covers look good for 2–3 months… and then reality hits.
I’m Joan Alvarado, agronomist engineer, and after working on landscaping projects across Tamarindo, Flamingo, Conchal and surrounding areas, I’ve tested ground covers in real conditions — not greenhouse conditions, not “catalog photos”.
Real Guanacaste.
These are the ones that actually perform.
Leaf-Cutter Ants (Zompopas) – Underground Farmers
f you’ve spent time in places like Brasilito, Potrero, or Reserva Conchal, you’ve probably seen them.
A perfect line of ants moving with discipline, carrying pieces of leaves like a production line.
It almost looks impressive.
Until your plants disappear.
What most people don’t understand
Leaf-cutter ants are not just insects — they are fungus farmers.
Here’s what actually happens:
- The ants cut leaves and transport them underground
- They chew them into a pulp
- That pulp becomes a substrate for a specific fungus
- The fungus is what feeds the entire colony
👉 The ants are not eating your plants.
👉 They are farming using your plants.
This system is highly optimized and has existed for millions of years.
A single colony can have:
- Thousands to millions of individuals
- Multiple chambers
- A central fungal “garden”
Why they become such a problem in Guanacaste
In areas like Tamarindo or Conchal, landscaping often includes:
- Irrigated ornamental plants
- Fertilized soils
- Dense vegetation
👉 This creates the perfect food source for the colony.
The more “beautiful” and lush the garden is…
the more attractive it becomes for them.
Why spraying doesn’t work
When people spray ants:
- They kill workers
- The colony replaces them in hours
- The fungus remains untouched
👉 The system stays alive.
How I control them (real agronomic approach)
To eliminate leaf-cutter ants, you must attack the fungus, not the ants.
✔ Locate the colony (can be several meters underground)
✔ Use specific bait that disrupts fungal growth
✔ Reduce available plant biomass
✔ Adjust landscape density
👉 This is why Landscape Design & Installation matters.
Bad design = continuous food supply.

Mosquitoes – A Water Management Problem
If you own a property in Tamarindo, Flamingo, or Las Catalinas, you’ve probably had this moment:
You walk outside in the afternoon… and within seconds, you’re surrounded.
Not one or two.
👉 Dozens.
At that point, most people think:
“We need fumigation.”
But as an Agronomist Engineer, I can tell you — that’s not where the problem starts.
The real biology behind mosquitoes
Mosquitoes are highly dependent on water. Their entire reproductive cycle revolves around it.
The cycle is simple, but extremely efficient:
- Eggs are laid in standing water
- Larvae develop in water
- Pupae transform into adults
- Adults reproduce again
In tropical temperatures like Guanacaste, this cycle can take as little as 5–7 days.
👉 That means populations can multiply extremely fast.
The hidden problem: micro water sources
Most people look for obvious water sources — ponds, tanks, etc.
But the real problem is here:
- Small puddles from irrigation runoff
- Water trapped in plant trays
- Slight depressions in poorly graded soil
- Roof drainage issues
- Decorative landscape elements holding water
👉 You don’t need a lake to have mosquitoes.
👉 You need a few millimeters of water.
Why fumigation alone fails
Fumigation only targets adult mosquitoes.
But:
- Eggs remain
- Larvae remain
- New adults emerge in days
👉 You are treating the symptom, not the system.
My approach (as an agronomist)
Mosquito control is a water management problem first.
✔ Identify all micro water accumulation points
✔ Redesign drainage where necessary (Landscape Design & Installation)
✔ Adjust irrigation frequency and distribution (Irrigation Systems)
✔ Apply larvicides in strategic areas (Fumigation Solutions)
✔ Reduce excessive vegetation density that traps humidity
👉 When water is controlled, mosquitoes collapse.

Cockroaches – Masters of Survival
Cockroaches are not just pests — they are survival specialists.
They’ve been around for millions of years, and unfortunately, Guanacaste offers them exactly what they need to thrive.
Why cockroaches love Guanacaste
Cockroaches require four things:
- Heat
- Moisture
- Food
- Shelter
👉 Guanacaste provides all four… naturally.
Especially in:
- Vacation rentals with turnover
- Storage areas
- Kitchens with poor ventilation
- Outdoor service zones
The real issue: hidden populations
What you see is only a fraction of the problem.
For every cockroach visible:
👉 There are many more hidden.
They live in:
- Wall voids
- Under sinks
- Behind appliances
- Inside cracks and crevices
Why spraying makes it worse
When you spray randomly:
- You push them deeper into hiding
- You scatter populations
- You don’t eliminate nesting zones
👉 You lose control of the infestation.
My control strategy
Effective cockroach control is precision-based.
✔ Identify nesting zones (critical step)
✔ Apply gel baits strategically (they carry it back to colony)
✔ Eliminate food sources
✔ Reduce moisture and humidity
✔ Improve sanitation routines
👉 This is directly tied to
👉 Garden & Property Maintenance
Because:
A poorly maintained property will ALWAYS bring them back.
Termites – Structural Engineers (Against You)
Termites are one of the most expensive problems I see in Guanacaste.
And the worst part is:
👉 You usually don’t know they’re there.
What makes termites different
Termites are not surface insects.
They operate:
- Underground
- Inside structures
- Inside walls
They build mud tubes to travel from soil to wood without exposure.
Why Guanacaste is ideal for termites
- Warm soil temperatures
- Moisture from irrigation systems
- Wood construction
- Organic material in soil
👉 Perfect environment.
The biggest mistake
People think:
“Let’s spray the wood.”
That does almost nothing.
Because:
👉 The colony lives in the soil.
My approach (engineering + biology)
✔ Inspect entire property (not just visible damage)
✔ Identify soil-to-structure contact points
✔ Install baiting systems that reach the colony
✔ Create barriers where needed
✔ Control irrigation near foundations
👉 This connects directly to:
Because moisture near structures = termite paradise.
Spiders & Scorpions – Indicators of Imbalance
Scorpions are usually the point where clients say:
“Now this is serious.”
And they’re right.
But here’s what most people don’t realize:
👉 Scorpions are not the beginning of the problem.
👉 They are the end result.
Why scorpions appear
Scorpions need:
- Shelter
- Food (other insects)
- Stable environments
They hide in:
- Rocks
- Debris
- Dense vegetation
- Cracks and construction gaps
What their presence means
If you have scorpions, it means:
👉 You already have an insect problem.
Because:
👉 That’s their food source.
Why spraying alone fails
Spraying might kill some individuals.
But:
- Food source remains
- Shelter remains
- Conditions remain
👉 They come back.
My approach (system elimination)
✔ Reduce insect population first
✔ Remove debris, rocks, and clutter
✔ Open dense vegetation
✔ Apply targeted perimeter treatments
✔ Improve landscape organization
👉 This is strongly connected to:
Final Thoughts
Final Thoughts: In Guanacaste, Pest Control Is Not What You Think
After working across Tamarindo, Flamingo, Conchal, Las Catalinas, and surrounding areas, one thing becomes very clear:
👉 Pest problems in Guanacaste are not random. They are predictable.
And more importantly:
👉 They are almost always the result of environmental conditions — not just the insects themselves.
What most people get wrong
Most property owners approach pest control like this:
- They see insects
- They call for fumigation
- The insects disappear (temporarily)
- A few weeks later… they are back
This creates a cycle:
👉 Spray → disappear → return → repeat
And over time, it becomes frustrating, expensive, and ineffective.
What is really happening
From an agronomic perspective, pest problems are usually connected to:
- Over-irrigation or poor irrigation design
- Drainage issues and water accumulation
- Excess organic matter and poor maintenance
- Dense or unbalanced landscaping
👉 These conditions create the perfect habitat for insects to reproduce and thrive.
So even if you eliminate the insects…
👉 The environment continues to produce more.
The shift that changes everything
The moment you stop thinking:
❌ “How do I kill the insects?”
and start thinking:
✅ “Why are they here in the first place?”
Everything changes.
Pests are controlled through systems — not sprays.
🚀 How GLS Solves Pest Problems Differently
At GLS, pest control is not treated as an isolated service.
It is part of a complete property system, designed specifically for the conditions in Guanacaste.
🔧 1. Identify the root cause
Before any treatment, GLS evaluates:
- Irrigation patterns
- Soil moisture conditions
- Landscape design
- Maintenance practices
👉 Because without understanding the system, there is no real solution.
💧 2. Correct environmental conditions
Depending on the property, this may include:
- Adjusting Irrigation Systems to eliminate excess moisture
- Improving drainage through Landscape Design & Installation
- Reducing organic buildup with proper Garden & Property Maintenance
👉 This is where most pest control companies stop.
👉 GLS starts here.
🧪 3. Apply targeted pest control solutions
Once the environment is corrected:
- Insect control is applied strategically
- Fungus treatments are implemented where needed
- Disinfection is performed in high-risk areas
👉 Not as a temporary fix — but as part of a long-term system.
🔄 4. Maintain control over time
Pest control in Guanacaste is not a one-time event.
It requires:
- Monitoring
- Adjustments
- Preventive maintenance
👉 This is how problems stay solved — not managed.
🧠 The Reality of Tropical Properties
If you own a property in Guanacaste, especially in areas like Tamarindo, Flamingo, or Conchal, you are managing a living system.
And in living systems:
👉 Small imbalances become big problems quickly.
Mosquitoes multiply in days.
Ant colonies expand underground.
Termites damage structures silently.
In Guanacaste, pest problems don’t wait.
🚀 Take Control of Your Property
If you are dealing with:
